Eat Breakfast like a King! It’s Healthy!

Ever heard of the saying “Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper”? According to an article on and a recent study done by the Univerrsity of Alabama at Birmingham, this may be the way to go for a healthier you.

The study claims that in order to help prevent metabolic syndrome, a health issue that includes abdominal obesity (belly fat), high triglycerides (heart disease and stroke), insulin resistance (diabetes), and other health issues, what you eat and when you choose to eat it may be the key.

“Studies have looked at the type and quantity of food intake, but nobody has undertaken the question of whether the timing of what you eat and when you eat it influences body weight, even though we know sleep and altered circadian rhythms influence body weight,” said Molly Bray, the study’s lead author.

During the research it was found that fat intake at the beginning of the day, when you wake up, turns on your “fat metabolism very efficiently” and also turns on the response to certain foods later in the day. The study showed that when the mice used in the experiment were fed carbs after they woke up that type of metabolism turned on and stayed on through out the day.

This seemed to prove that depending on what you ate for breakfast tunes your metabolism for that sort of food during the whole day. Marin Young, a senior author of the study, said, “This study suggests that if you ate a carbohydrate-rich breakfast it would promote carbohydrate utilization throughout the rest of the day, whereas, if you have a fat-rich breakfast, you have metabolic plasticity to transfer your energy utilization between carbohydrate and fat.”

So essentially eat the fatty and carbohydrate rich foods in the morning and tone down the amount and types of foods through out the day. As if we needed a reason, it sounds like bacon, eggs and toast are what’s for breakfast!
