Cheese is a food that many adore. It there are so many flavors and varieties that it makes people swoon over a bite at times. In Brockworth, Gloucestershire however, people are so enamored with cheese have a tendency to, sometimes literally, go head over heels for cheese!
Gathering at Cooper’s Hill, people carry on a 200-year-old tradition where they chase a 7lb wheel of Double Gloucester cheese down 200 yards of steep hill. If you’re thinking that sounds dangerous, you’d be correct. Usually there is a dedicated medical team at the event to help with any injuries that may occur.
This year, however, they’ve changed the rules by banning the cheese rolling contest. The dedicated fans decided to go ahead and continue with the tradition by holding an unofficial contest despite the fact that police stated there would be no dedicated medical help. This was due to the fact that last years contest included 18 injured people, 10 of which were spectators.
The unofficial contest this year brought out about 300 people from all over, some from as far away as Holland!
Chasing cheese maybe a 200 year old tradition, but maybe staying uninjured enough to eat it, is a safer bet or does the excitement and adrenaline rush of possible injuries make the winning all the sweeter?
