What would you do if you had a machine that could make your favorite meals at the touch of a button? Sounds like something from Star Trek or The Fifth Element, but a couple of researchers at MIT have actually come up with something that may do just that!
This “personal food factory” was thought up by Marcelo Coelho and Amit Zoran, in an attempt to bring cooking into the digital age. This machine (not ready yet and won’t be for at least 2 years) is to work in a way like a 3-D printer but instead of using plastic and simple metals, the “Cornucopia” machine will be able to store and mix ingredients, building up a meal layer-by-layer.
This sounds like a great idea for those who have no time to cook or can’t, but it makes one wonder what will happen to the next generation who would really think food just appears magically. Also what about those kids who already haven’t a clue as to where food comes from or how it works to go from the farm to our tables and the way food helps us nutritiously.
An idea like this may be interesting in theory, but for those of us who not only enjoy eating, but the way it feels to create a meal with our own hands, we’ll probably leave this new invention out of our own kitchen. Besides how great can a food made by a machine really be without the love, the most important ingredient of all, to go into it?
