It’s almost Valentine’s Day, a day for lovers and sweethearts, where we share affectionate cards, soft teddy bears, beautiful flowers, and delicious food all in order to show the one we love how much we care.
This holiday first became associated with romantic love around the twelfth century, when courtly love began to thrive, due in part to Geoffrey Chaucer. Some claim that the first recorded romantic Valentine’s Day is in Parlement of Foules (1382) by Chaucer, where a poem is written to honor the first anniversary of the engagement of King Richard II of England to Anne of Bohemia.
In Paris there was even a “High Court of Love” that was established on Valentine’s day in 1400. This court dealt with love contracts, betrayals, and violence against women. The judges were chosen by women based upon poetry reading. The oldest surviving valentine is from the fifteenth-century, written by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife.
