Peanut Butter Sushi?

Peanut butter and sushi. These aren’t two types of food you see together in the same sentence. While peanut butter is pretty self explanatory (basically peanuts ground up into an incredibly yummy paste) and can be spread on all kinds of things. Sushi on the other hand is a Japanese sticky rice dish usually served with raw fish (though not always). The good people at  Serious Eats have found a way to pair the two together!

These peanut butter sushi rolls aren’t made with rice though, and  no fish either (that might be an interesting combination but, no thanks). It’s more about the shape and the fact that the peanut butter takes place of the sticky rice. They also incorporate vegetables, fruits, and other traditional goodies for a peanut butter sandwich like honey or jam.

The Serious Eats people show step-by-step photo instructions on how to make your own. They make it look pretty easy and would be a great way to get kids in the kitchen and learning how to experiment with different flavors and textures. They don’t take all the credit however, gaining some of the ideas from Peanut Butter and Co. and say they were also inspired by the maki rolls sold in Japanese restaurants near by.

If the name sushi scares the kiddies, you can also call them pinwheels, which is what they’ve been known by for years. This should get people more interested in trying new things or old things in new ways. It’s always fun to play with our food and make something new!!
