Lemonade is a well known thirst quencher during the warmer months. It’s cool and refreshing and goes well with most summer meals. This one includes strawberries and basil, to give it a little something beyond the same old lemon and water mix!
- 1 cup (250ml) sugar
- 1 cup (250ml) chopped strawberries
- 2 cups (500ml) water
- 3 lemons, juiced and zest
- 4 cups (1L) cold water
- 1 tablespoon fresh basil leaves, roughly chopped
- Slices of strawberries

In a sauce pan over medium high heat, add in 2 cups water, sugar and chopped strawberries and mix well. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally.
Turn heat down to low and simmer for about 3 minutes. The color of the liquid should turn red from the berries. Stir in lemon zest and allow to cool completely.
Strain the syrup and discard the solids left from the berries and zest.
Pour lemon juice and 4 cups (1L) of water into the syrup and whisk to mix well. Add basil and whisk again. Pour into a large pitcher with ice. Add strawberry slices.
Serve immediately or keep for up to 2 days in the refrigerator. If you’d like to make this an adult drink, add 1.5 oz (44ml) of vodka or rum to each drink!
