Churros are a fried pastry, much like doughnuts. They may have originated in Spain but are very popular in Mexico and America. Here is a recipe for the cinnamon and sugar treat just in time for Cinco De Mayo!
- 1 cup (250ml) water
- 2 tablespoons (15ml)sugar
- ¼ teaspoon (1ml) salt
- 2 tablespoons (15ml)oil
- 1 cup (250ml) all purpose flour
- Oil for frying
- ¼ cup (60ml) sugar
- ½ teaspoon (1ml) cinnamon
Serves 4

In a small pan over medium heat, add water, 2 tablespoons sugar, salt and 2 tablespoons oil and bring to a boil. Remove from heat. Stir in flour to form a soft ball.
In a deep pan bring oil up to 375F (190C). Using a pastry bag, squeeze dough pipes into the hot oil. Fry a couple of minutes or until golden. Remove and drain on paper towels to get excess oil off the churros. If you don’t have a pastry bag, spoon the dough into a zip bag and cut the corner off of one side.
Mix together the sugar and cinnamon. Roll the churros in the mixture and serve! This also is great with chocolate sauce.
