Main Courses, Recipes

In the Chinese culture, duck symbolizes fidelity and fertility making this dish ideal for both holidays that are being celebrated this February 14th, Valentine’s day and  the Chinese new year!

Serves 6 – 8
Time required 180 minutes
Difficulty level
Cost of ingredients 18 USD

  • 1 (5lb) duck, washed and dried
  • 2 teaspoons ginger, powdered
  • 1 ½ teaspoons sugar
  • ½ teaspoon five spice powder
  • 2 tablespoon  soy sauce
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • ½ teaspoon star anise, crushed
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper
  • 2 tablespoons honey

Combine ingredients and brush it on the inside and outside of duck and allow to marinate for 1 hour.

Preheat oven to 350F (176C) and roast duck for 2 hours, turning and basting with the drippings occasionally.

Serve with rice (fertility, luck, wealth) or long noodles (for longevity) and  boiled dumplings (eaten on the Chinese new year‘s eve to usher in good luck), makes a perfect Chinese new year meal!
